Isaac's remnants bring rain to drought-hit Midwest

(Reuters) - The remnants of Hurricane Isaac brought rain to drought-stricken parts of the lower U.S. Midwest on Saturday after the storm killed at least 30 people on its trek across the Caribbean and Louisiana and Mississippi, authorities said.

Rainfall totals of no more than 3 inches were expected through the lower Ohio River Valley by Saturday night after Isaac lost much of its punch while passing over Missouri.

Top sustained winds had dropped to 20 miles per hour and flash flood threats were diminishing, the National Weather Service said.

Flood warnings were still in effect for the Kansas City, Missouri, area as well as south-central Illinois, but Dan Petersen, a forecaster at the National Weather Services' Hydrometeorological Prediction Center in College Park, Maryland, said flooding was not expected to pose much of a problem.

"The rain is going to be occurring in areas that are parched and have greater capacity for accepting rainfall," Petersen said.

At least five deaths in Louisiana and two in neighboring Mississippi were blamed on Isaac and residents of the two states still suffered from power outages and widespread flooding on Saturday, authorities aid.

President Barack Obama, who declared a disaster in Mississippi and Louisiana on Wednesday, is scheduled to visit the region on Monday.

Isaac was the first hurricane to strike the United States this year and it hit New Orleans almost exactly seven years after Hurricane Katrina devastated the city, causing an estimated 1,800 deaths.

More than 500,000 homes and businesses remained without electricity across Louisiana on Saturday, leaving them without air conditioning under sweltering temperatures, local government officials said.

In other lingering effects from the storm, U.S. regulators said 93 percent of daily oil production and 65 percent of national gas output in the U.S.-regulated part of the Gulf of Mexico remained shut on Saturday due to Isaac.

Producers returned only a small amount of crude oil production by Saturday, while the return of natural gas production was also proceeding solely, according to U.S. regulators. Many producers said they continued restaffing offshore platforms and production was expected to ramp up quickly in the coming days.

TEST OF FLOOD PROTECTIONS

Isaac lingered over New Orleans for the better part of two days, providing a first, successful test of the city's $14.5 billion flood-control system assembled after Katrina. Areas outside those flood protections fared worse.

At least one levee was overtopped southwest of New Orleans, leaving some homes under 12 feet of water. New Orleans was struck by 20 inches of rain, and many other locations in Louisiana and Mississippi logged more than 10 inches of rain.

Isaac was expected to be a mixed blessing for the drought-parched Midwest farm belt, since experts said its rains came too late for this season's crop of corn and most soybeans.

The worst drought in nearly half a century remains deeply entrenched across nearly two-thirds of the United States.

Isaac's rains could help speed up pasture recovery, however, and get the U.S. winter wheat crop off to a good start.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture is to release estimates on Tuesday of Isaac's damage to cotton and rice crops in the Mississippi Delta and lower Mississippi Valley region.

Isaac killed 23 people in its passage over Hispaniola, the Caribbean island shared by the Dominican Republic and Haiti, before barreling into the U.S. Gulf of Mexico.

On the heels of Isaac, Tropical Storm Leslie churned over the open Atlantic Ocean on Saturday, hundreds of miles east-northeast of the Caribbean's Leeward Islands.

Leslie had top sustained winds of 70 mph. But U.S. forecasters said it posed no immediate threat to land and was not expected to become a hurricane before veering away from the Caribbean and heading farther out to sea in s north-northeast direction on Tuesday.

A-Rod?hitless in first rehab appearance

Associated Press Sports

updated 9:55 p.m. ET Aug. 31, 2012

LAKELAND, Fla. (AP) - New York Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez went 0-for-3 with a walk on Friday in his first rehab appearance since going on the disabled list on July 25 with a fractured left hand. He led off and started as designated hitter for the Tampa Yankees in a Class A game against the Lakeland Flying Tigers.

In his first at-bat, he grounded weakly to shortstop. He walked and scored a run, then struck out in his final two at-bats, stranding two runners.

Rodriguez suffered the injury after being hit by a pitch by Seattle's Felix Hernandez on July 24. Rodriguez is expected to play at third base on Saturday.

Lakeland defeated Tampa, 7-6.

15 years on, Diana remembered in London

Dozens of bouquets of flowers, posters and cards were left at the gates of Kensington Palace on Friday as Princess Diana was remembered on the 15th anniversary of her death.

Tourists, well-wishers and passers-by took photos and read the tributes at the royal residence in the British capital, Diana's official home from 1981 until her death, just as they had done in far larger numbers 15 years before.

Diana died aged 36 in a car crash in a Paris road tunnel on August 31, 1997 alongside her companion Dodi Fayed, triggering an outpouring of grief from much of the British public.

Within hours, a carpet of flowers had begun to spread out in front of the palace and many Britons threw off their reserve and mourned openly.

In one of the defining moments of his time in office, then prime minister Tony Blair described her as the "people's princess", striking a chord with the grieving nation.

Fifteen years on from that day Maria Scott, 41, who travelled from Newcastle in northeast England to visit the temporary memorial, said she had made the journey every year since Diana's death.

"Diana should be remembered because she's the mother of our future king and she should never be forgotten," Scott said.

"To the country I would say this tribute means a lot and I would like to think William and Harry would like this as well, that we are remembering their mother and all of her humanitarian work as well.

"She wasn't afraid to go the extra mile for anybody."

Petra Vallila, originally from Finland, placed a solitary bloom at the palace gates. The 29-year-old from Helsinki, now living in London, said: "I think it's kind of nice that people still come here.

"It's been 15 years, so it's a lovely way to remember someone who did a lot of good. She was obviously a very good person."

One card placed on the gate read: "Darling Diana, we loved you too much to ever forget you. Nor will we forgive those who betrayed you. Your wonderful sons think of you everyday and so do we.

"God bless you, with love from Margaret and Victor Funnel."

Princess Diana was the mother of Princes William and Harry, whom she had with Prince Charles before their divorce in 1996.

William is second in line to the British throne.

Back to school: From rural Africa to the Ivy League

The United States Achievers Program provides funding and moral support for promising but disadvantaged students from 13 countries on four continents to pursue their educational goals.

By Scott Baldauf,?Staff writer / September 2, 2012

In early 2008, Joshua Foromera was a talented Zimbabwean high school graduate living as a refugee in South Africa. He fled Zimbabwe because of political and economic collapse, seeking higher education opportunities.

Today, Mr. Foromera is a biology and chemistry major at Duke University in North Carolina, following his dream of finding a safer, more effective treatment for the virus linked to AIDS.

Good grades and standardized test scores got Foromera, a graduate of a rural Zimbabwean public school, into Duke. But a small public-private partnership between US universities and the United States government helped him navigate the unfamiliar process of taking American-style tests, filling out college applications, seeking financial aid, and finally, applying for US student visas. The program, called the United States Achievers Program (USAP), aims to help promising students from disadvantaged backgrounds to further their education in the United States, and then return to their home countries to make a difference.

Joshua Foromera is just one of hundreds of foreign students with modest incomes attending university in the United States, thanks to private scholarships, enthusiastic volunteers, and the relatively small $12 million USAP program run out of US embassies in 13 countries on four different continents.

At a time when the US?s strategic advantage in higher education is being tested, and global talent moves to emerging economic powers such as India and China, programs like USAP help ensure that America?s colleges and universities still draw in the lion?s share of academic talent, and contribute to the economic boost higher education brings to the US economy.

?The primary goal for what we do and why we do it is to cultivate relationships with future leaders around the world,? says Meghann Curtis, deputy assistant secretary of state for academic programs, including USAP, the Fulbright program, and other scholarships.

?With US Achievers Program, we are trying to tap into the underserved students, to give opportunities of an educational experience to people who otherwise wouldn?t have it.?

'Tell us your budget'

Foromera, now a college senior, just finished a summer research internship with Harvard University and the Massachusetts General Hospital?s AIDS research center, working to find specific enzymes to target in the latest generation of AIDS drugs. But if he hadn?t heard about education opportunities in the states, he would still be a refugee in South Africa, unable to afford higher education there, he says.

?I didn?t have a cent,? Foromera says. ?When I applied for Duke, they knew I would need money for everything, but they said, ?tell us your budget.??

In total, US scholarship programs have educated some 310,000 Fulbright students (192,800 of them from foreign countries), and a large number of these have gone on to important careers. ?Not only do we help people to go back to serve their countries, we help them to become leaders," says Ms. Curtis. "Three hundred and fifty Fulbright alumni have gone on to become heads of state, 16 have become Nobel laureates, and the US Achievers Program now makes this possible for those of limited means.?

There is another advantage. Congressional studies have found that the $12 million spent for international scholarships through USAP?s parent organization, Education USA, brings in some $21 billion to the US economy each year, generating new business ideas, innovations, and economic activity.

America 'is a meritocracy'

The achievers program had humble beginnings, and was the brainchild of an employee at the US Embassy in Harare, Zimbabwe. As an academic adviser on the embassy staff, Rebecca Zeigler-Mano noticed one common feature of all the prospective students coming to her office. They were almost all wealthy and well-connected.

Millipede family added to Australian fauna

Friday, August 31, 2012

An entire group of millipedes previously unknown in Australia has been discovered by a specialist ? on museum shelves. Hundreds of tiny specimens of the widespread tropical family Pyrgodesmidae have been found among bulk samples in two museums, showing that native pyrgodesmids are not only widespread in Australia's tropical and subtropical forests, but are also abundant and diverse. The study has been published in the open access journal ZooKeys.

"Most pyrgodesmid species are so small they could be easily overlooked," explained millipede specialist Dr Robert Mesibov, of the Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery in Launceston, Tasmania. "What's interesting is how thoroughly overlooked they've been. We now know there are dozens of native species of these millipedes in our warm, wet forests, stretching over more than 2000 km on Australia's east coast."

Six new species and three new genera of the colorful, curiously sculptured millipedes have now been described from Australia, all from the state of Queensland.

"It's a great example of the value of museum collections," said Dr Mesibov. "Scientists from the Queensland Museum and CSIRO Entomology collected bagfuls of leaf litter in hundreds of places over many years. They extracted bugs in bulk from the fresh litter and took out just the ones they were studying, usually beetles. The remaining bugs are in 'residues' stored in the Queensland Museum and the Australian National Insect Collection."

Dr Mesibov said it's not generally appreciated that zoological specialists find most of their new species in museums. "Sure, biological expeditions to previously unexplored places turn up exciting new species. But there are plenty of surprises waiting when you go rummaging through the residues on museum shelves. In this case, it was a whole family of animals not known from Australia."

Noh steals show from Tiger, Rory at Deutsche Bank

NORTON, Mass. (AP) ? Seung-yul Noh first made a name for himself when he won an Asian Tour event at 17 and then beat K.J. Choi just over a year later in the Malaysian Open. Looking to refine his swing in his first year as a PGA Tour member, a strong collection of names jumped out at him.

Tiger Woods. Hunter Mahan. Justin Rose. All of them were clients of Canadian swing coach Sean Foley, and Noh joined the stable in May.

"He had great three players," Noh said.

The 21-year-old from South Korea was better than all of them Friday in the opening round of the Deutsche Bank Championship.

Never mind that Woods ran off six straight birdies ? his longest such streak since the 2005 Masters ? for a 7-under 64, his lowest opening round in three years. Noh took aim at the TPC Boston in the afternoon and put together a bogey-free round of 62 to build a one-shot lead.

He made four straight birdies on the front nine then closed with back-to-back birdies to take the lead over Chris Kirk.

Woods, Jeff Overton and Ryan Moore were another shot back, followed by a group that included Rory McIlroy and Louis Oosthuizen at 65. The conditions were so pure except for a tricky wind that swirled through the trees that the average score was just under 70.

Leading the way was Noh, who missed only two greens and took 26 putts. Noh said the change in his swing was geared toward making him more consistent. He said Foley often will send him photos of Woods, Rose and Mahan for guidance, although their swings are different.

"He's a good kid," Mahan said. "If Foley says, 'Do this 1,000 times,' he'll go home and do it 1,000 times."

And what does Mahan do?

"I'll do it 900 times and then quit," he said with a laugh.

Mahan had reason to smile after a 68, which could not have come at a better time. He has missed his last two cuts, in the PGA Championship and The Barclays, taking him from a likely captain's pick for the Ryder Cup to on the bubble.

There was a lot going on in Boston, from the FedEx Cup to the Ryder Cup. The top 70 players from the 99-man field will advance to the third stage of the FedEx Cup playoffs next week in Indianapolis, which is a big deal to a guy like Overton. He grew up in Indiana, played for the Hoosiers, and knows Crooked Stick better than anyone in the field. That will be the site of the BMW Championship next week.

Crooked Stick hasn't hosted the best players in the world since John Daly won the 1991 PGA Championship.

Overton is No. 83 in the FedEx Cup, so yes, this was a good start.

"I'm constantly getting a lot of great text messages and people say, 'Hey, we're really excited to see you at Crooked Stick,' just the whole Hoosier nation," Overton said. "It's just going to be fun if I can get into the event."

On a glorious start to Labor Day weekend in New England, it was Woods who supplied the buzz.

Woods hit a full swing, flop shot behind the 12th green to a few feet away to save par, the only time he was seriously in trouble. He hit a high cut with a 5-iron to a tough pin on the par-3 11th for birdie from 15 feet, and he holed an 18-foot birdie on the 13th.

The streak began with a 6-iron to the middle of the 18th green for a two-putt birdie. He rolled in birdie putts from the 12-foot to 18-foot range on the next three holes, and while he nearly holed out with a wedge on No. 5, his best work came at the 293-yard fourth hole.

Woods can reach the green with a 3-wood, but he felt the wind gust into his face, and opted for a driver, playing for a baby cut to take off some distance and get it into the front bunker for a relatively easy up-and-down. Instead, it came a yard short of the sand, and he had to play a high flop to a tiny section of the green that ran away from him.

"I had to play an all-out shot to try to keep it on the green," he said. "I went for it, and it came off."

His bid for a seventh straight birdie ? the last time he had a streak that long was the third round at the 2005 Masters that carried into Sunday morning ? was a 12-footer up the hill on the sixth hole. He took a step toward the hole as the ball was a foot away, sure it was going to drop, before stopping in his tracks as the ball turned slightly to the left. Woods spun around and removed his cap in disbelief.

As many as he was making, perhaps it was a shock to see one miss.

"Unfortunately, it just wiggled about a half-ball left, where I thought it was going to wiggle about a half-ball right," he said.

The round ended on a sour note, with a 7-iron as the wind briefly died. The ball went into the collar of the green, sitting down just enough that he tried to swing hard enough to generate speed and spin the ball. It didn't work out, and the chip ran 12 feet by. He missed for his only bogey, and tossed his putter at the bag in disgust. Anyone who had not seen the previous 17 holes might have thought it was another tough day at the office.

Instead, it was his lowest score since a 64 in the opening round of the 2009 AT&T National at Congressional.

Getting off to a good start is nothing new for Woods. This was the 14th time in 18 tournaments this year that he was at par or better. Lately, it's been about the finishes. Even though Woods has won three times this year ? the most of anyone on the PGA Tour ? he has turned in some peculiar weekends. Twice he was tied for the lead at majors going into the final two rounds and stumbled. Last week at Bethpage Black, he had a 72-76 weekend to drop into the middle of the pack.

Woods doesn't seem bothered by all this. He attributed last week to extreme conditions on the greens at Bethpage in the third round, and a final round that simply got away from him on a three-hole stretch on the back nine.

"It wasn't like I was hitting a lot of awful shots," he said. "I just needed a couple putts to go my way, and it didn't happen. I should be right around par, and it turns into an over-par round. Today was about the same as I have been playing pretty much all summer, just go out there and playing pretty consistent. It was just a nice, solid round."
