Experts find 1st hint MERS may be infecting camels

LONDON (AP) ? Scientists have found an intriguing clue that suggests camels might somehow be involved in infecting people in the Middle East with the mysterious MERS virus.

Since the virus was first identified last September, there have been 94 illnesses, including 46 deaths, from MERS, or Middle East respiratory syndrome, mostly in Saudi Arabia. Aside from several clusters where the virus has likely spread between people, experts have largely been stumped as to how patients got infected.

In a preliminary study published on Friday, European scientists found traces of antibodies against the MERS virus in dromedary, or one-humped, camels, but not the virus itself. Finding antibodies means the camels were at one point infected with MERS or a similar virus before fighting off the infection.

The antibodies were found in all 50 camel blood samples from Oman, compared to 15 of 105 samples from Spanish camels. Animals from Spain, the Netherlands and Chile were tested for comparison to those from Oman. No MERS antibodies were found in tests done in cows, sheep or goats.

"Finding the (MERS) virus is like finding a needle in a haystack, but finding the antibodies at least gives you an indication of where to look," said Marion Koopmans, chief of virology at the Netherlands' National Institute for Public Health and the Environment, the study's senior author. "What this tells us is that there's something circulating in camels that looks darned similar to MERS."

The study was published in the Lancet Infectious Diseases.

Koopmans expected results would be similar for other camel populations across the Middle East.

"We can't say this proves camels are a reservoir for MERS but it does show there is something going on with camels that may be relevant for people," Koopmans said.

Across the Middle East, camel products including milk are popular and the animals are often kept for racing and other purposes.

MERS is part of a family of coronaviruses that can cause the common cold as well as SARS, which sparked a global outbreak in 2003. Saudi Arabia health officials, in a letter this week to the New England Journal of Medicine, documented seven new infections of MERS in health workers, including some mild cases.

MERS is most closely related to a bat virus, leading some scientists to think bats are the natural source. Some experts think bats might be infecting other animals like camels with MERS before passing it to humans. MERS can cause symptoms including fever, cough, breathing problems, pneumonia and kidney failure. There is no known treatment or cure.

Some experts said more testing of other animals in the Middle East was needed.

"Camels may be involved in (MERS) transmission but there could also be cows, goats, or something else involved," said Vincent Munster, a virologist at the National Institutes of Health, who co-wrote an accompanying commentary.

There are ongoing tests on camel samples from elsewhere in the Middle East, as well as tests on dates, which some scientists think may be infected by bat excrement before being eaten by people.

The World Health Organization called the camel findings "an important development" but pointed out that many MERS patients had no known contact with animals.

"There must be some other step somewhere that results in human infections," WHO spokesman Gregory Hartl said.

He said it was still unclear what kind of animal contact might be needed for MERS to spread.

"Even if we know where the virus is, we don't know exactly how it's jumping into humans," Hartl said. "This is another piece of the puzzle, but there are still a lot of holes that need to be filled in."

Amazon launches site for purchase of fine art

(AP) ? Amazon.com is getting into the fine art arena.

Customers can buy original and limited edition works of art from more than 150 prominent galleries and dealers via Amazon Art.

The announcement came Tuesday, a day after Seattle-based Amazon.com Inc. announced that its CEO, Jeff Bezos (BAY'-zohs), had purchased The Washington Post.

Amazon Art features 40,000 works from more than 4,500 artists. The wide range of works includes folk art, impressionism and modern art.

Prices range widely, too.

There's a photograph by Clifford Ross for $200 and a painting by Norman Rockwell for $4.85 million.

The online marketplace offers detailed information about the artist, work, provenance and exhibition history.

Amazon worked with Sotheby's for a short-lived experiment selling art online in 1999.

Samsung Denies Manipulating Galaxy S4 for Better Benchmark Results

Galaxy S4

Samsung this morning denied intentionally manipulating the Galaxy S 4 to produce more favorable benchmark results.

"The maximum GPU frequencies for the Galaxy S 4 have been varied to provide optimal user experience for our customers, and were not intended to improve certain benchmark results," Samsung said in a statement.

At issue is a post from Beyond3D.com that questioned Samsung's benchmarking techniques. That prompted AnandTech to run some tests on the S4, the results of which were published last night.

"Through some good old fashioned benchmarking, the poster [on Beyond3D.com] alleged that Samsung was only exposing its 533MHz GPU clock to certain benchmarks - all other apps/games were limited to 480MHz," according to AnandTech.

The blog said its own investigation revealed that Samsung lets hardware run faster during certain benchmarking tests, allowing for better results. "GLBenchmark 2.5.1 appears to be singled out as a benchmark that is allowed to run the GPU at the higher frequency/voltage setting," AnandTech said.

In response, Samsung said that "under ordinary conditions," the Galaxy S 4 can attain maximum GPU frequency of 533MHz.

"However, the maximum GPU frequency is lowered to 480MHz for certain gaming apps that may cause an overload, when they are used for a prolonged period of time in full-screen mode," Samsung said. "Meanwhile, a maximum GPU frequency of 533MHz is applicable for running apps that are usually used in full-screen mode, such as the S Browser, Gallery, Camera, Video Player, and certain benchmarking apps, which also demand substantial performance."

Massachussets State Boxing Commission Holding Meeting on Chael Sonnen's License for UFC on Fox Sports 1.1

They received a union complaint on Sonnen...

Based on a complaint from the union organization, Unite Here, the Massachusetts State Boxing Commission will hold a closed door meeting on Thursday (August 8) to decide if UFC fighter Chael Sonnen will receive a license for his fight at UFC Fight Night 26/UFC on Fox Sports 1.1.

Reportedly, a representative for the state's Department of Public Safety, who oversees the commission, has said that due to the complain, the commission elected to hold the meeting after its regular session will determine the issue of Sonnen's license. DPS spokesman, Terrel Harris stated, "The commissioners will sit in and they'll hammer out the issue. When they've made a final decision, they'll let everybody know what that decision was. Bottom line is that they have to do it relatively soon, because the fight's a week from Saturday."

You can read the complaint from Unite here at the above link. The complaint is directed at Sonnen's previous conviction in 2011 on a federal charge of money laundering and states that the commission has the right to deny his license based on Sonnen's "moral turpitude."

Chael Sonnen is still previously scheduled to face Mauricio Rua in the headlining fight at the event which is set for August 17 at the TD Garden in Boston.

Regarding the use of Sonnen's testosterone use, Harris also added, "The executive session is to determine what acceptable levels of testosterone are for people who have a medical reason for testosterone supplements. Right now, he's not even licensed."

Windows Phone and Android vault ahead in smartphone market share

    Technology

    IDC

    IDC

IDC's numbers for Q2 show big growth in Android and Windows Phone.

The latest market share numbers from tracking firm IDC show Android in the lead and Apple's iOS losing ground globally, as expected in the period before the new iPhone is announced. Also showing healthy (even robust) growth is Windows Phone.

Microsoft's mobile platform saw shipments in Q2 grow by 77.6 percent, from 4.9 million to 8.7 million. That may be peanuts compared with the tens of millions of iPhones and hundreds of millions of Android phones being sold, but it's solid growth ? and it puts Microsoft above the beleaguered BlackBerry, which is steadily losing customers despite reinventing its platform.

Most of Windows Phone's growth is due to Nokia's well-received and increasingly visible Lumia series of smartphones, which made up more than 80 percent of the platform's sales last quarter.

As for Android and iOS, the real battle will come this fall, when the next generation of iPhone is expected to be out. But in the meantime (as indicated by IDC's recent smartphone shipments report) Android is exploding. With around 187 million units sold last quarter alone (73.5 percent more than in 2012's Q2), Android has taken almost 80 percent of the smartphone market.

But with the big launches from HTC, Samsung, and LG (the just-announced G2) behind us, the fall may still belong to Apple, depending on what the next iPhone brings to the table.
