Shas? solution to the party?s leadership crisis, the forum of three, has earned an envious spot in the weekly chareidi newspapers and magazines in Eretz Yisrael. Shas? own Yom L?Yom does not play modest, allocating significant real estate to tell the story and share the success, including the array of rabbonim whose photo appears alongside their bracha on the success achieved by Maran HaGaon HaRav Ovadia Yosef Shlita. The paper actually explains in depth that the credit for saving the party goes to Maran?s youngest son, HaGaon HaRav David Yosef, who heads the gadol hador?s Badatz Beit Yosef.

Rav Moshe?s efforts paid off big time in this case, at least for the time being, and the rabbonim who appear in the party-affiliated newspaper are not just Sephardim but prominent Ashkenazim including the Sanzer Rebbe Shlita, the Vishnitzer Rebbe Shlita and Chief Ashkenazi Rabbi Yonah Yechiel Metzger.

The Shas success begs the question if the Ashkenazim can achieve the same success, but with growing splits in the litvish and chassidic factions, such a reality appears unlikely at the present time.

Gifted Workshops a 'Natural' Fit for Many Future College Students

Gifted Workshops a 'Natural' Fit for Many Future College Students

DuBOIS ? Professionals with expertise in environmental and wildlife conservation are in high demand today, and a group of future college students got an up-close look at some career options in those fields at Penn State DuBois recently. More than 40 students from gifted programs at eight area school districts participated in a Gifted Workshop on campus. Open to middle school or high school students enrolled in a gifted program, the workshop was designed to introduce those bright students to educational opportunities that would get them working in careers related to environmental stewardship. To that end, faculty members from the campus' Wildlife Technology Program held sample classes and labs that provided hands-on lessons and field experience.

"Some of my students are involved in scouting, some are interested in outdoor experiences, and they were very interested in these programs. I could see some of them going into things like environmental engineering," said Della Kurtzhals, the gifted program coordinator at Clarion Area High School. "This shows them that they have good options for that education close to home."

In fact, the Wildlife Technology Degree is an option exclusive to DuBois, explained Admissions Counselor Holli Lashinsky. She said, "Wildlife Technology is unique to Penn State DuBois; we're the only campus in the Penn State system to offer it. The great thing about it is that we provide extensive lab and field experience, so students get hands-on learning opportunities."

Some of those hands-on experiences the students sampled included learning how to estimate the age of white-tailed deer by examining their jaws and teeth. This is information that wildlife professionals would use to manage a deer herd and its habitat.

They also had the opportunity to participate in placing leg bands on song birds, a tactic that professionals use to track movement and migration patterns. Additionally, students used radio-tracking equipment to locate radio collars hidden in a near-by forested area. This simulated the real-world work that experts do when tracking animals that have been tranquilized and equipped with radio collars. Once an animal is outfitted with a radio collar, they can be tracked using specialized radio equipment so that their migration patterns, feeding patterns, and more can be recorded. It's a technology that is used on everything from deer and elk, to bears, and even pheasants.

Overall, each of the activities represented the gathering of information that wildlife professionals use to manage animal populations and habitats in the wild, for the overall best quality of life for animals, people, and the environment.

"These workshops help students explore different opportunities that they may want to pursue in the future," Lashinsky said. "Or, it may introduce them to opportunities they never thought of before." She explained that many graduates of the Wildlife Technology Program go on to enjoy careers with the Pennsylvania Game Commission, the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, and numerous private organizations devoted to the study and preservation of wildlife and habitat.

The fact that workshops like this allow students to see the important work that happens behind the scenes, that they may not be aware of, is what makes them so valuable according to some educators. Anne Young, the secondary gifted program coordinator at DuBois Area High School said, "This allows the students to come to Penn State DuBois and see exactly what is offered, and to see what the classes and courses of study are like. It allows them to think about their options and their higher education early, and really get the ball rolling and start thinking about college."

In addition to gifted workshops, Wildlife Visitation Day is held three times each semester at Penn State DuBois. The day serves as an open house for the Wildlife Technology Program, where prospective students meet with program faculty members, tour campus, and receive enrollment and financial aid information. Wildlife Visitation Days are open to prospective students of any age, who want more information about the program and the careers for which it prepares graduates. ExxonMobil executive killed in Belgium

BRUSSELS (AP) ? Belgian authorities are seeking the public's help in solving the killing of an executive for ExxonMobil, the world's largest oil company, who was shot to death in front of his wife nearly two weeks ago on a street in a suburb of the Belgian capital of Brussels.

Nicholas Mockford, a British national, was shot on Oct. 14 as he left an Italian restaurant in Neder-over-Heembeek. Belgian authorities declined to provide information on the crime at the time, which they said was common in investigations of serious crimes, although a Dutch-language television station aired a report the day after the shooting.

A spokesman for ExxonMobil said Friday that the company was "shocked by the very tragic death." Mockford had a long career with ExxonMobil, the spokesman said.

A Belgian police report made public Thursday said Mockford and his wife, Mary, were walking toward their car when a man threatened Mrs. Mockford, hit her in the face several times, and tried to grab her purse. Suddenly, a second man appeared and fired four shots at Mockford, who died on the spot, the report said. The assailants, who were wearing motorcycle helmets, initially escaped on foot but were later seen on a motorcycle, according to the report.

Shortly before the attack, a white van crossed the couple's path. Investigators are asking the driver of the van to come forward.

India Women v Thailand Women ? Asian Cricket Council Women's Twenty20 Asia Cup (Group A) ? Match Update

Aided by a concentrated bowling attack, the India Women claimed a comprehensive 77-run win over the Thailand Women in their Group A match during the ongoing Asian Cricket Council Women's Twenty20 Asia Cup, at the Guanggong International Cricket Stadium in China, today on October 25.

The India Women won the toss and elected to bat first, and while Thailand?s Somnarin Tippoch (3-0-19-2) and Nattakan Chantam (4-0-15-1) attempted to keep their opponents in check, the India Women eventually posted a final total of 109 by the end of 20 overs.

Poonam Raut (8) and Mona Mehsram (17) opened the innings for their side, but the opening stand did not proceed beyond 16 runs. Raut fell prey to Chantam in the 6th over, but her successor, skipper Mithali Raj, top-scored for the team with 28, in addition to setting up a 21-run stand with Meshram. The latter was sent back to the pavilion in the 10th over, dismissed via run out, but Player of the Match Raj soldiered on, establishing a 38-run stand with Harmanpreet Kaur (15).

Their combined efforts got the team up to 75 by the 15th over, after which Kaur was caught and bowled by Tippoch, and Raj also fell prey to Tippoch in the 17th over. Nagarajan Niranjana (16*) and Amita Sharma (13*) joined forces for the final partnership of the Indian Women?s innings, setting up an unbeaten 28-run stand which got the team up to a final total of 109 by the end of 20 overs.

The team then followed up their batting performance with a fierce bowling display ? every one of their 6 bowlers, save one, claimed two wickets each, and displayed incredible economy. Aided by the efforts of Ekta Bisht (4-2-7-2), Rasanara Parwin (4-1-8-2), Niranjana (4-1-9-2), Reema Malhotra (2-1-1-2), and Meshram (1.3-1-1-2), the India Women cut their opponents off, all out, at a paltry 32.

Nattaya Boochatham remained the top-scorer for the Thailand Women with a dismal 8-run contribution, while skipper Tippoch only managed a paltry 1, as did Naruemol Chaiwai and Rattana Sangsoma. Chantam, Nantanit Konchan, and Premwadee Doungsin were all dismissed on duck, and by the final over, the Thailand Women were all out at 32, granting the India Women a 77-run win.

Satellite images tell tales of changing biodiversity

ScienceDaily (Oct. 24, 2012) ? Analysis of texture differences in satellite images may be an effective way to monitor changes in vegetation, soil and water patterns over time, with potential implications for measuring biodiversity as well, according to new research published Oct. 24 by Matteo Convertino from the University of Florida and colleagues in the open access journal PLOS ONE.

The authors designed statistical models to estimate two aspects of biodiversity in satellite images: the number of species in a given region, or 'species richness', and the rate at which species entered or were removed from the ecosystem, a parameter termed 'species turnover'.

They tested their models on data gathered over 28 years in a water conservation area in the Florida Everglades and compared their results to previous reports from the region. They found that their models were nearly 100% accurate when predicting species turnover; conventional methods only have 85% accuracy.

According to the authors, their automated method using satellite images could help improve the efficiency and decrease the cost of campaigns that monitor biodiversity and guide policy and conservation decisions. Convertino says, "Texture-based statistical image analysis is a promising method for quantifying seasonal differences and, consequently, the degree to which vegetation, soil, and water patterns vary as a function of natural and anthropic stressors. The application of the presented model to other fields and scales of analysis of ecosystems is a promising research direction.''

Here are Some Good Reasons to Consider Investing in China Again ...

With negative sentiment toward China reaching an extreme in recent months, patient investors have been rewarded with this week?s news of improving data from the Asian giant. [In fact, according to BCA] this appears to be a good time to be investing in China, as stocks are historically cheap. Words: 760

So says Frank Holmes, CEO and Chief Investment Officer of U.S. Global Investors(www.usfunds.com)?in edited excerpts from his original article* posted under the title Chinese Stocks Looking Like a Bargain.

Lorimer Wilson, editor of www.FinancialArticleSummariesToday.com (A site for sore eyes and inquisitive minds) and www.munKNEE.com (Your Key to Making Money!), has edited the article below for length and clarity ? see Editor?s Note at the bottom of the page. This paragraph must be included in any article re-posting to avoid copyright infringement.

Holmes goes on to say, in part:

Retail Sales, Disposable Income and Export Numbers

CLSA Sinology?s Andy Rothman reported that in September:

  • retail sales growth rose 13.2 percent, which was the fastest pace of the year,
  • real urban disposable income grew nearly 10 percent and
  • real rural disposable income rose more than 12 percent during the first three quarters of the year and,
  • while export numbers are weak, China has so far avoided the large-scale export-sector layoffs that led to 2009?s massive stimulus.

Commodity Imports

There was strength in commodity imports, too.

  • Copper imports into China increased 11 percent compared to the previous month due to increased demand from power infrastructure, white goods restocking and auto production.
  • Iron ore rose a modest 4 percent compared to the previous month, which is encouraging.
  • There was also a sharp rebound in oil imports most likely due to holiday restocking and lower international prices. In fact, Pareto Securities found that Chinese implied oil demand came in at an all-time high of 9.8 million barrels per day in September.

?

Chinese Implied Oil Demand as All-Time High

Fixed Asset Investment

The markets also saw an increase in fixed asset investment (FAI), a measure of capital spending, which grew at ?the fastest pace since October 2011,? says CLSA. According to Credit Suisse, ?a surge in transportation spending in the month of September is starting to reflect the project approvals for highway, rail, airport, and metropolitan transport projects announced in May and June.?

While Credit Suisse says FAI growth was boosted by government investment stimulus, CLSA also notes that fixed asset investment and capital spending by private firms has been rising faster than state-owned firms for 30 of the last 31 months.

Money Supply

Money supply, a key lubricant of the economy and markets, also continued to increase, and this has historically driven Chinese equities. Take a look at the chart below, which shows the year-over-year money supply compared to the MSCI China Index over the past decade. Over the past 10 years, after the supply in money bottomed, stocks soon rebounded.

On January 31, 2012, money supply hit a near decade low of 12.4 percent year-over-year growth. Since then, the number has been creeping higher, rising sharply to 14.8 percent in September, and shortly thereafter, equities responded.

Money Supply Growth Bullish for Chinese Stocks

Stock Prices & Investor Sentiment?

The Wall Street Journal recognized the improvement in Asian stocks and investor sentiment this week, suggesting that the ?region?s economy could be nearing the end of a slowdown? and that??if the Chinese economy shows sustained signs of stabilizing, it would remove a major overhang of worry for investors in Asia, and may spur more capital raising and other deals as investors become confident enough to switch money out of bonds and back into equity markets.?

Who in the world is currently reading this article along with you? Click here

This appears to be a good time to be investing in China, as stocks are historically cheap. At the beginning of October, BCA noted that there was a ?prevailing pessimism? around China and that the stocks were ?currently trading at hefty discounts to world averages and even to euro zone stocks.? The firm indicated that Chinese shares had a forward price-to-earnings ratio of below 9 times; the world and U.S. benchmarks traded at 12 and 13 times, respectively.

Chinese stocks are also cheap compared to emerging markets. In 2007, China traded at a 75 percent premium to emerging markets. Today, Chinese stocks trade at a 20 percent discount. If you look at a comparison of price-to-earnings in China to those in emerging markets, you have to go back to 2006 to find that ratio as low as it is today.

?

Chinese Stocks Cheap Relative to Emerging Markets on a P/E Ratio Basis

The low price-to-earnings indicates to me that the negativity pendulum has swung too far. ?Investors have turned from euphoria at the height of the ?China mania? five years ago to extreme pessimism,? says BCA.

Conclusion

Back in April, I listed three trends that global investors should watch in China: A rebound in the liquidity cycle signaling a rally in equity prices, a new leadership with an incentive to maintain growth, and Chinese stocks reverting to their mean, as history appears to favor Chinese stocks landing in the top half of emerging markets [see table below].

In order to argue that we will not see a sharp slowdown in Chinese growth, it is not enough to claim that a) some expert or institution has predicted that Chinese growth will not slowdown, b)that China has enough savings in its coffers to bail itself out of a crisis or c) that Beijing leaders cannot tolerate growth below 8%, so of course growth will not drop below 8%. As greater evidence for the bear camp surfaces, China bulls need stronger justifications for their positions or risk losing credibility. Japan Engaged In Further Efforts To Reverse Results Of World War II

Global Times
October 23, 2012

Efforts to overturn war?s verdict futile
Zhong Sheng

The Chinese have highly valued credibility and integrity since ancient times. There is a time-honored proverb that ?credibility is a trump card to sustain governance and win public support.? In order to keep a foothold in the international arena, a country has to win respect and trust from other countries, keep its promises, and behave in an open-minded and upright way.

The Cairo Declaration and the Potsdam Proclamation are the legal basis for the establishment of the international order after World War II. On August 10, 1945, the Japanese government offered to surrender to the Allies. On August 15, the Japanese emperor Hirohito announced Japan?s acceptance of the terms of the Potsdam Declaration.

In the surrender document, Japan clearly promised to ?accept the provisions in the declaration issued by the heads of the Governments of the United States, China, and Great Britain 26 July 1945 at Potsdam, and subsequently adhered to by the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics.?

If, as some in Japan have recently claimed, the Cairo Declaration and the Potsdam Proclamation are unilateral announcements without binding force, how can Japan explain its signature on the surrender document? And why did the surrender officially mark the end of the war?

The Cairo Declaration and the Potsdam Proclamation were the prerequisites for the Allies to end the war against Japan, and prerequisites for the international community, especially Asian countries, to reaccept Japan in the post-war era. By their recent questioning of the two documents, some in Japan actually seek to negate the fruits of the world?s victory in the anti-fascist war and challenge the post-war international order.

Japan?s recent provocations over the Diaoyu Islands issue did not happen accidentally. The fundamental reason is the increasing expansion of domestic right-wing forces, which are attempting to negate Japan?s history. In international media, articles warning against Japan?s ?turn to the right? are often published.

On October 10, Japanese ambassador to the US Ichiro Fujisaki published an article on the Huffington Post, saying that external arguments about Japan?s growing nationalism and its turn to the right are ?vastly exaggerated.?

Nevertheless, facts cannot be erased. In the post-war era, Japan has been reluctant to either deeply reflect upon its history of invasion or thoroughly settle with its militarism. In recent years, there are constant arguments made within Japan that deny the Nanjing Massacre in 1937 and the organized and forced prostitution run by the Japanese military.

Some Japanese politicians even actively seek to revise the Peace Constitution and the Three Non-Nuclear Principles. It is frequently reported that top Japanese officials, including former Japanese prime minister and newly elected chief of the Liberal Democratic Party Shinzo Abe, visit the Yasukuni Shrine.

Aren?t all these signals of Japanese politics? ?turn to the right?? Shouldn?t Asians and people across the world be alert to these signals?

In 1970, German Chancellor Willy Brandt knelt in front of a monument to the Warsaw Ghetto victims and delivered a silent apology to those who suffered during World War II. This helped improve the image of Germany. No politician in Japan has taken a similar stance. On the contrary, many seek to publicly distort and even deny its past invasions. This is exactly why Japan still fails to look graceful in front of people in Asia and the world at large.

Japan has been saying that it wants to become a ?normal country.? However, Japan first needs to have a normal mentality, completely cleanse its legacy of militarism and win external trust through practical deeds.

After World War II, Japan created an economic miracle. But economic success doesn?t mean normalcy in politics. The recent provocations over the Diaoyu Islands issue make people wonder whether Japan will advance toward peaceful development or will return to the path of militarism. Its Asian neighbors and countries across the world are watching.

The author is a commentator with the People?s Daily. The article is the third in a series on the Diaoyu Islands originally published in the People?s Daily.

Butchering Customer Service | Cider Stassen Business Site

All businesses strive to provide excellent customer service, but there?s a fine line between service and servility. Extreme servility is called obsequiousness. Now there?s a word for you to know. Even if you don?t know what it means, you?ve experienced it?maybe in a restaurant, a clothing store, a car dealership, anywhere where employees hope that by virtue of their attention they will make sales or garner large tips. It?s one thing to be attentive and meet customers? needs; it?s another to be so present and ?in their face? that customers think you want them to adopt you.

A few months ago, I ordered a gift of steaks and roasts from a meat mail order business for some family members. When no acknowledgement came, I called to find out if they had gotten their present. As it turned out, the parcel delivery service had left the package at the wrong address, but the people who had received it in error were honest enough to immediately call the intended recipients to let them know about the mix up.

The only person who had made a mistake was the delivery man who?d misread the mailing label, and no one ever heard a word out of him or his company. The same can?t be said for the meat company. In its relentless pursuit to keep customers satisfied, company representatives started calling me?daily?to make sure I was still happy and to see if I didn?t want to order more meat.

After the umpteenth call that resulted in no additional purchases from me, I asked to have my name and number removed from the calling list. Being nice hadn?t worked. Maybe some force would be more effective. Keep in mind I had had absolutely no beef with the mail order company until now. It was at this point, however, that customer service attention turned into customer obsession.

I thought I?d gotten the point across, but about a week later I started receiving calls at my work number. When I would take advantage of the caller ID feature on my phone, I saw an area code and number I didn?t recognize. I answered in my usual way, but each time the caller said nothing and simply hung up. This happened several times until I checked the number and discovered it was the cattle crew. This was out of control. I?d said no from my home number. The answer wasn?t going to be any different on my business line. Now they were intruding on my work day without saying a word.

One final call (and I emphasize the word final) came at 9:17 p.m. last week. Dinner was long over, and no one in the house was thinking about food, especially not about T-bones. No one was consciously thinking about anything since we were all asleep. It had taken almost an hour to get the three-year-old to quit fussing about having to go to bed, but at last he?d drifted off. That is, until the phone rang. I was roused from a very deep sleep by the phone ringing and our child yelling for Mommy.

Too unawake to check the caller ID, I answered. To my utter amazement, it was another company rep wanting to know if I was ready to order more filets. It was time to take this bull by the horns. ?No,? I said, ?not now, not ever again!? I can?t remember exactly, but I?m sure I pointed out that I?d asked to have my name and number removed from their list. That he had had the audacity to call so late in the evening was absolutely beyond my comprehension.

This experience is a clear illustration of how customer service can go terribly wrong. Probably part of this was due to someone misreading the data and assuming that since I had placed a substantial order, I would likely do so again. Who knows? Maybe I would have at a later time, but the ?overkill? from the sales staff turned out to be a deal breaker as far as I?m concerned.

Let this be a cautionary tale for any businesses out there that think ?hard selling? is going to work every time. In many cases it will backfire and have just the opposite effect from the one you want.

I?ve recently conducted a less-than-statistically-valid study polling people (my office manager, my aunt, and a very nice woman behind me in a line at Safeway) about customer disservice. Although not all the results are in, here are ten tips to take to heart to keep your customers truly satisfied:

1. Just because your business model says customers should, in all probability, be interested in buying something, don?t assume they?re kidding when they tell you no.

2. Limit unsolicited calls to the same person.

3. Call at a reasonable time.

4. After you hear ?Hello,? really listen to what the other person says to you.

5. Don?t argue when the customer says ?no.?

6. Honor the customer?s wishes.

7. If you are offering service to someone in person, be available, but don?t hover.

8. An internet order does not give you authorization to call someone at home or work to offer add-on purchases or services.

9. Know that a lot of people have caller ID, so don?t call and hang up without saying something.

10. Ask yourself: Would you want to get the call you?re getting ready to make?

This is just a starting point. Maybe you have some pet peeves of your own. If so, send them to our website. There are plenty of people we like to hear from. Just don?t contact me about buying anything that was standing on four legs and had a pulse until recently. I?m now a vegetarian thanks to the last person who did!

iBooks 3.0 appears in iTunes listing ahead of iPad mini event

Looks like iBooks 3.0 may be making an appearance at this Tuesday's iPad mini event, at least if specifications that mysteriously showed up in a book listing on the iBookstore is correct. Florian Innocente of iGen.fr caught the reference in a volume of The Largo Winch series.

This wouldn't be the first time iTunes revealed something it ought not be revealing, but it's impossible to rule out simple errors in the strings as well, so it's important to remember nothing is confirmed until Apple announces it.

However, this is in line with what iMore has been hearing since we first learned about the iPad mini back in May -- namely that the iPad mini is aimed squarely at Amazon, the Kindle, and their Kindle books empire, much in the same way as Apple has aimed past features and services at Google and Android. Ebooks, unlike music and video, is one of the few areas where Amazon has a good content presence, and reading is one of the few areas where, at least in some markets, the Kindle may be preferred over the current 9.7-inch iPad.

Apple, of course, would rather everyone use an iPad, and it looks increasingly like they're going to make their case for that using the iPad mini in just a few days time...

Dinosaur Cells In T. Rex Fossil? Shocking Find Gets New Support From Molecular Analysis

    By Kate Wong

RALEIGH?Twenty years ago, paleontologist Mary Schweitzer made an astonishing discovery. Peering through a microscope at a slice of dinosaur bone, she spotted what looked for all the world like red blood cells. It seemed utterly impossible?organic remains were not supposed to survive the fossilization process?but test after test indicated that the spherical structures were indeed red blood cells from a 67-million-year-old Tyrannosaurus rex. In the years that followed, she and her colleagues discovered other apparent soft tissues, including what seem to be blood vessels and feather fibers. But controversy accompanied their claims. Skeptics argued that the alleged organic tissues were instead biofilm?slime formed by microbes that invaded the fossilized bone.

Schweitzer and her colleagues have continued to amass support for their interpretation. The latest evidence comes from a molecular analysis of what look to be bone cells, or osteocytes, from T. rex and Brachylophosaurus canadensis. The researchers isolated the possible osteocytes and subjected them to several tests. When they exposed the cell-like structures to an antibody that targets a protein called PHEX found only in bird osteocytes (birds are descended from dinosaurs), the structures reacted, as would be expected of dinosaur osteocytes. And when the team subjected the supposed dinosaur cells to other antibodies that target DNA, the antibodies bound to material in small, specific regions inside the apparent cell membrane.

Furthermore, using a technique called mass spectrometry, the investigators found amino acid sequences of proteins in extracts of the dinosaur bone that matched sequences from proteins called actin, tubulin and histone4 that are present in the cells of all animals. Although some microbes have proteins that are similar to actin and tubulin, the researchers note that soil-derived E. coli as well as sediments that surrounded the two dinosaur specimens failed to bind to the actin and tubulin antibodies that bound to the extract containing the apparent osteocytes.

Schweitzer and her collaborators detailed their findings in a paper released online October 16 in the journal Bone and in a talk given October 17 in Raleigh at the annual meeting of the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology. ?Here?s the data in support of a biofilm origin,? Schweitzer said in her presentation as she showed a blank slide. ?We haven?t found any yet.?

'Perversion files' show locals helped cover up

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) ? An array of local authorities ? police chiefs, prosecutors, pastors and town Boy Scout leaders among them ? quietly shielded scoutmasters and others who allegedly molested children, according to a newly opened trove of confidential files compiled from 1959 to1985.

At the time, those authorities justified their actions as necessary to protect the good name and good works of Scouting. But as detailed in 14,500 pages of secret "perversion files" released Thursday by order of the Oregon Supreme Court, their maneuvers protected suspected sexual predators while victims suffered in silence.

The files document sex abuse allegations across the country, from a small town in the Adirondacks to downtown Los Angeles.

At a news conference Thursday, Portland attorney Kelly Clark blasted the Boy Scouts for their continuing legal battles to try to keep the full trove of files secret.

"You do not keep secrets hidden about dangers to children," said Clark, who in 2010 won a landmark lawsuit against the Boy Scouts on behalf of a plaintiff who was molested by an assistant scoutmaster in the 1980s.

The files were shown to a jury in a 2010 Oregon civil suit that the Scouts lost, and the Oregon Supreme Court ruled the files should be made public. After months of objections and redactions, the Scouts and Clark released them.

The Associated Press obtained copies of the files weeks ahead of Thursday's release and conducted an extensive review of them, but agreed not to publish the stories until the files were released.

The new files are a window on a much larger collection of documents the Boy Scouts of America began collecting soon after their founding in 1910. The files, kept at Boy Scout headquarters in Texas, consist of memos from local and national Scout executives, handwritten letters from victims and their parents and newspaper clippings about legal cases. The files contain details about proven molesters, but also unsubstantiated allegations

Many of the files released on Thursday have been written about before, but this is the first time the earliest ones have been put in the public domain.

The 1959-85 files show that on many occasions the files succeeded in keeping pedophiles out of Scouting leadership positions ? the reason they were collected in the first place.

But the files document some troubling patterns.

In many instances ? more than a third, according to the Scouts' own count ? police weren't told about the alleged abuse.

And there is little mention in the files of concern for the welfare of Scouts who were allegedly abused by their leaders. But there are numerous documents showing compassion for suspected abusers, who were often times sent to psychiatrists or pastors to get help.

In 1972, a Pennsylvania Scouting executive wrote a memo recommending a case against a suspected abuser be dropped with the words: "If it don't stink, don't stir it."

In numerous instances, alleged abusers are kicked out of Scouting but show up in jobs where they are once again in authority positions dealing with youths.

One of the most startling revelations to come from the files is the frequency with which attempts to protect Scouts from alleged molesters collapsed at the local level, at times in collusion with community leaders.

On the afternoon of Aug. 10, 1965, a distraught Louisiana mother walked into the Ouachita Parish Sheriff's Office. A 31-year-old scoutmaster, she told the chief criminal deputy, had raped one of her sons and molested two others.

Six days later, the scoutmaster sat down in the same station and confessed.

"I don't know an explanation, why we done it or I done it or wanted to do it or anything else it just ? an impulse I guess or something," the man told a sheriff's deputy.

The decision was made not to pursue charges. "This subject and Scouts were not prosecuted," a Louisiana Scouts executive wrote to national headquarters, "to save the name of Scouting."

In a statement on Thursday, Scouts spokesman Deron Smith said" ''There is nothing more important than the safety of our Scouts."

Smith said there have been times when Scouts' responses to sex abuse allegations were "plainly insufficient, inappropriate, or wrong" and the organization extends its "deepest and sincere apologies to victims and their families."

The Scouts in late September made public an internal review of the files and said they would look into past cases to see whether there were times when abusers should have been reported to police.

The files showed a "very low" incidence of abuse among Scout leaders, said psychiatrist Dr. Jennifer Warren, who conducted the review with a team of graduate students and served as an expert witness for the Scouts in the 2010 case that made the files public. Her review of the files didn't take into account the number of files destroyed on abusers who turned 75 years old or died, something she said would not have significantly affected the rate of abuse or her conclusions.

The rate of abuse among Scouts is the not the focus of their critics ? it is, rather, their response to allegations of abuse.

Throughout the files released Thursday are cases in which steps were taken to protect Scouting's image.

In Newton, Kan., in 1961, the county attorney had what he needed for a prosecution: Two men were arrested and admitted that they had molested Scouts in their care. But neither man was prosecuted.

The entire investigation, the county attorney wrote, was brought about with the cooperation of a local district Scouts executive, who was kept apprised of the investigation's progress into the men, who had affiliations with both the Scouts and the local YMCA.

"I came to the decision that to openly prosecute would cause great harm to the reputations of two organizations which we have involved here ? the Boy Scouts of America and the local YMCA," he wrote in a letter to a Kansas Scouting executive.

In Johnstown, Pa., in August 1962, a married 25-year-old steel mill worker with a high school education pleaded guilty to "serious morals" violations involving Scouts.

The Scouting executive who served as both mayor and police chief made sure of one thing: The Scouting name was never brought up. It went beyond the mayor to the members of a three-judge panel, who also deemed it important to keep the Scouts' names out of the press.

"No mention of Scouting was involved in the case in as much as two of the three judges who pronounced sentence are members of our Executive Board," the Scouts executive wrote to the national personnel division.

Associated Press writers Matt Sedensky in West Palm Beach, Fla.; Rebecca Boone in Boise, Idaho; and Shannon Dininny in Yakima, Wash., contributed to this report.

TweetBot for Mac reaches the Mac App Store, keeps the 3rd-party Twitter client flame alive

Tweetbot for Mac snap-together in alpha

When Twitter put out its strict new API guidelines, there was some doubt as to whether or not third-party clients like Tapbots' Tweetbot for Mac would even make the cut -- the user caps and other curbs on unofficial apps potentially made it tough to develop competition around a different (and possibly better) experience. That makes today's official appearance of Tweetbot in the Mac App Store as much symbolic as it is practical. While there won't be many significant shocks for those who've been participating in Tweetbot's alpha and beta stages, the finished version gives everyone running OS X Mountain Lion a major and sometimes more advanced alternative to official choices, such as TweetDeck, as well as existing third-party options like Twitterrific. A $20 price doesn't make Tweetbot the cheapest way to buck convention by any means, but it might be worth the investment if you're already committed to Tapbots' iOS apps or want to make a statement on the value of third parties in an ecosystem.

Has UK E-Book Adoption Reached a Plateau? | Publishing ...

E-book sales grew over the past year by 188% ? a slight slowing ? but the proof will come at Christmas.

    By Michael Bhaskar

Print sales are generally public. Bestseller lists ? with hard, open numbers to back them up ? are a fixture. Not so for e-books, for which total sales and breakdowns by retailer or category are still carefully guarded by retailers and publishers alike. It?s a shame, as greater transparency would allow for better decision making and give us an overall sense of the contours of digital change.

A visitor at the Frankfurt Book Fair tries out an e-reading app on a tablet

No matter, it?s just about possible to make out what is happening in the UK. Firstly though, we should separate the two strands of digital publishing that have emerged. On the one hand you have straightforward ?vanilla? e-books, or digital replicas of print titles; on the other you have digital-first, digital-only e-books that require more developmental work, breaking new ground in terms of product and business model. These latter projects have, I believe, caught on in the UK more than elsewhere. Before that, let?s look at basic e-books.

Competition Increases, the Key is Christmas

Amazon Kindle is still the dominant platform, shifting more devices and selling more books than any other retailer by a considerable margin. Their aggressive pricing, cheap devices, intensive marketing and long established place as the go-to Internet retailer have all cemented them at the top of the e-book pile. Apple iBooks, Kobo, Google and Sony, alongside a host of smaller start-ups, are all in the mix though. With the launch of Barnes & Noble?s Nook in the UK, competition will be ferocious this Christmas. To what extent the Nook makes inroads against the Kindle will be the decisive question for e-book watchers in 2013.

They face an uphill battle. Earlier this year it was announced, to the shock of many, that Waterstones, the UK?s largest book retail specialist, would partner with Amazon to sell Kindle devices in stores. Many were surprised that Waterstones would partner with their most strategically difficult competitor, but clearly Waterstones feel the plan will ultimately give them a viable digital presence and protect the efficacy of bricks-and-mortar retail. It will undoubtedly boost the shift to e-books.

Recent Publishers Association figures put e-book sales growth at 188% over the past year ? which actually represents a slowdown. Digital trade sales accounted for ?84 million in revenue from January to June 2012. When both HarperCollins and Hachette UK released their semiannual reports, e-book sales accounted for over a quarter of revenues at both companies. Victoria Barnsley, the CEO of HarperCollins UK, predicted that e-book revenues could be a third of the group?s total within two or three years. Other indications suggest growth may be plateauing as e-book reading reaches a natural level among frequent book buyers. As ever, no one knows quite for sure what will happen, but the picture will emerge in the weeks after Christmas.

Commercial Fiction is the Digital King

There is, however, a clear sense of what sells as an e-book. Commercial fiction is clearly the ?classic? e-book seller. Non-fiction, reference and children?s all struggle to sell the volume achieved by fiction, a pattern seen not just in Britain but around the world (as evidenced by the Fifty Shades phenomenon).

While non-fiction, reference and children?s may struggle as basic e-books, they have started finding a market as mobile apps. British publishers, including established brands like Penguin and Faber & Faber, as well as start-ups like Touch Press and Nosy Crow, have produced notable commercial and critical successes in an area fraught with difficulties. Most publishers are still only building their skills and understanding for this market, so it is encouraging to see positive breakthroughs.

While basic e-books still generate the majority of digital book revenue in the UK, there is a new suite of products increasingly coming into the public consciousness and, crucially, delivering a solid return. Matching a creative flair to a commercial nous will be the key. Then again, it always was.
